Wow the election results are in for the federal election are in and and omigod it is definitely a moment in Australian history. Australia now faces a period of political instability and potentially weak government unprecedented since World War Two. Both Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott have made clear during their speeches late last night they will try to form a minority government with support from independents. Neither leader has surrendered power,and both still seek to become Prime Minister. Thus meaning the election is nowhere near over. The battleground now shifting towards the emerging new parliament. It now comes down to cutting the best deal with the highest number of independents.

In this unresolved election three judgements can be made by the result of the hung parliament result

• First, this election is a huge repudiation for the Labor Government and the worst set back for such a government since the one-term Scullin Government in the Great Depression.
• Second, Tony Abbott’s political recovery since winning the leadership from Malcolm Turnbull  last year has almost no parallel in Australian history.
• Third, the Greens continue to improve their position holding the Senate balance of power and winning their first House seat at a general election. Fourth, the Labor brand is contaminated in Queensland and NSW where the damage was done.

Both PM wannabes will now enter a consultation process with the independents, But the progress must wait upon the final determination of the seats. The independents will want to ensure that the decisions they make are acceptable by their electorates.

This is seriously an exciting time for Australian political history. How it is going to go is any one’s guess. What is now faced is that whoever forms government out of the two will only have a limited ability to implement their program.

Now what’s this mean for the LGBT community?

Gay experts are saying the significant swing to the Greens nation wide is good news for the LGBT movement towards equality in the next government. Anti- LGBT Family First have lost their one senate seat as the conservative values party’s leader Steve Fielding was defeated in Victoria. For the NSW senate, Family First attracted just over 11,000 votes, while the ever gay-friendly Australian Sex Party got well over 20,000. Meanwhile, pro-gay marriage independent MP Warren Entschwon his Queensland electorate of Leichhardt.

It’s like this, regardless of who ends up controlling the government, both major parties made election commitments to ensuring the federal protection for sexual and gender minorities against discrimination, and there is no denying the LGBT community will hold both parties accountable to ensure that this happens swiftly.

Now the battle begins for undecided seat, political legitimacy and finally the judgement of the independents, either way you look at it the new government will be about the people and that’s how it should be!

2010 will definitely go down as a moment in Australian political history.

Well I could tell you and with all honesty that would be a complete and utter betrayal in confidentiality and privacy. The fact is guys give the pair a break. Yes they got married a month ago, yes she is four months pregnant, but at the end of the day it is their business. In some cases, they’re young like you and I and yes we like to have our fun, so whatever circumstances they chose to get married and have a baby for that matter is completely up to them.

There is no denying people are curious to see what baby these two make, but the fact is, it is their baby, not the media or the public! I know I might sound like a hypocrite, being a blogger and all, but at the end of the day there is a certain level of privacy that celebrities should be able to enjoy, especially when there is a baby concerned. I to some extent try to respect that. Knowing someone close to the situation has also made me partially re-think what I post on this blog in general.

People thought Michael Jackson was a freak for the way he kept his children sheltered from the public eye, but at the end of the day he trying to give them the best upbringing he could being such a public figure. So yes I could blow the horn on what is probably one of the biggest scoops in both the celebrity and fashion world right now for a measly ten minutes of fame, or I could choose to have a bit of integrity and respect for someone else. I prefer the latter

The fact is with this weekend’s pending election many are confused as to who to vote for PM. I look at this way, even though I hate to admit it Julia Gillard is the lesser of two evils. So where does that leave us? Simple we need to get people in the senate that actually give a damn about the nation’s people. Now I’m not telling you who to vote for.

That is not my job, but I can only share with you who I think is important to get seats in parliment so that in the future when decisions are being made we have someone on the inside that actually give damn about the nation’s people. Now if you haven’t heard about the Sex Party, between now and voting time this weekend you should SERIOUSLY check out their policies.

The Policies

Censorship

• Bring about the establishment of a truly national classification scheme which includes a uniform non-violent erotica rating for explicit adult material for all jurisdictions and through all media including the Internet and computer games.

• Introduce an R and X rating for computer games

• To overturn mandatory ISP filtering of the Internet and return Internet censorship to parents and individuals.

• We oppose the mandatory retention of all Australian users’ Internet browsing history and emails by ISPs for at-will inspection by law enforcement agencies, and support strong judicial oversight over the ability of law enforcement to access individuals’ Internet and email data.

Education

• To bring about the development of a national sex education curriculum as a first step in preventing the sexualisation of children.

• Development of a national internet education scheme for parents.

Equality

• To enact national anti discrimination laws which make it illegal to unfairly discriminate against people or companies on the basis of job, occupation, profession or calling.

• Develop global approaches to tackling child pornography which focus on detection and apprehension of the producers of the material.

Workplace Relations

• Ensure that the introduction of paid parental leave is fair and equitable for small businesses.

• Abolish sex slavery and sexual servitude by introducing non morality-based immigration policies that allow bona-fide sex workers to work legally in Australia.

Religion / Ethical Issues

• Establishment of a Royal Commission into child sex abuse in religious institutions.

• The public education system should be secular in nature and not provide for any religious instruction whatsoever.

• An Ethics course along the lines of the current NSW trial, developed by the St James Ethics Centre, to be incorporated into the national curriculum.

• Ending the tax exempt status for religions.

• Cessation of tax-exempt status on all but the charitable work of religious institutions.

• Supports stem cell research, including embryonic stem cell research, and maintains it is a vital medical issue, not a religious issue.

• Infractions are to be treated in an administrative framework and not in the criminal justice system.

• Immediate cessation of the use of drug sniffer dogs in public.

• Legalise and regulate cannabis for specified medical uses.

• Trafficking and dealing in drugs to remain a criminal offence.

• Supply of any drugs to a minor is to be a criminal offence.

• Laboratory quality drug testing stations to be provided at all music festivals and the like.

• Subsidised and high quality drug testing kits to be made available through pharmacies, age restricted premises and mobile distribution centres.

• Legalise and increase the number of medically supervised injecting rooms

• Legalise the prescription of heroin to registered and habitual users.

Euthanasia

• Voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide for patients with a terminal illness and suffering severe pain to be decriminalised.

• In addition to the patient’s primary medical practitioner a second and independent practitioner would be required to confirm his / her agreement with the diagnosis and prognosis.

• Information about palliative care options must be given to the patient and having been given this information the patient must confirm to the primary medical practitioner that all other options are not acceptable and that he or she wants assistance.

• A seven day cooling off period must then be allowed for before assistance can be provided.

Abortion

• Uniform abortion laws across Australia.

• Full decriminalisation of abortion – removal from criminal statutes.

• Abortion to be treated as a medical matter not a criminal matter.

• All abortion providers to have authority to prescribe Mifepristone (RU486).

• Medicare funding for abortion at all stages of pregnancy.

• An abortion may be performed at any time with the consent of the woman and if a medical practitioner certifies that it is appropriate under the circumstances.

• Minors (under the age of 16) may obtain an abortion without the consent of a parent/guardian.

• Ensure abortion is a part of sex education in schools.

It is also great so see politicians with a sense of humour!

Now if you forget one moment about the extremely colourful name, their policies make a shiz load of sense. It is bringing the rights back to the people! Now hopefully this has made some enlightenment as to who to vote for during this federal election.

Last night I witnessed a moment in the history of Australian film, I attended the Brisbane preview of ‘Tomorrow When The War Began.’ The word amazing simply doesn’t do it justice, so I really don’t want to ruin the experience for you so I’ll try to keep this short and sweet. June 16, 2009, Screen Australia announced that John Marsden’s ‘Tomorrow When The War Began‘was going to be adapted into a film, I’ll be honest I was excited like a lil school girl when she first heard ‘Twilight‘  was being made into a film. The ‘Tomorrow Series’ were by far my favourite series of books going through high school, and not only was I excited at the prospect, but I also wondered what this would mean for the fans for the thousands of fans all over the world. This was a story that meant so much to many people growing up and now it was going to hit the big screen, but with this thought I was like “Oh shit! Please don’t stuff it up!”

Lets be honest movie adaptations of novels often disappoint, and since hearing the news it was being made, I had been dying to see it. I simply can’t talk for everyone else, but after watching it last night I can honestly say I was far from disappointed.

Ellie (played by Caitlin Stasey) is the main protagonist. The fact was if this movie was going to work, Ellie was the one aspect that had to be right in the film adaptation. It’s her story, and if she wasn’t played right, the film would simply fall apart. This was my greatest fear but after watching it those fears have been completely destroyed. All over the world people will be cheering Caitlin, not only did she pull it off, she truly did pay the character we grew to love justice. The fact is the film’s cast is perfect. The chemistry between the cast that you get to watch on screen is not just believable but outstanding. This is shown from the faithful, written and delivered dialogue, to natural interactions between each actor.

Each character is introduced earlier on in the film, faithfully to how they were in the novel, and what surprised me more than anything throughout the film was how funny certain scenes were. Two scenes that come to mind are Homer’s introduction in the beginning, exiting a police station wearing a t-shit with “F#@K THE POLICE” printed on the front, the scene where Ellie, Corrie and Robyn persuade Robyn’s dad to let her join the group of teenagers for their trip down into hell. As we know, upon returning from Hell, the group finds their homes deserted, and make their way into town to find out what is going on. This is the turning point for the film, where the group and the audience are violently thrown into the harsh and disturbingly real reality that their town has been invaded.

Writer/ Director Stuart Beattie has put a lot of emphasis on giving each character a strong personality. The humour present in the novel has been really accentuated, along with the characters’ transitions into living in a war zone. Several scenes were changed, and several scenes were added, but it these changes actually add to the movie, the characters and the overall plot. The fact is a novel and movie are two completely separate mediums and to see how Stuart Beattie merged these two together, is a true art form and I really can’t see how anyone could be disappointed. One of the big changes that fans would notice from the book is that in the film adaptation rather then the overall narration coming from the diary of Ellie, instead we get a video diary. Ultimately I believe this Stuart Beattie chose this to emphasise that this movie would be visual one, which is back up by the fact that everything you see is predominantly from Ellie’s experience.

Being objective is almost impossible for me, having waited  for over 14 years for this film to be made, I’ll be honest I walked into the cinema, having my own ideas and expectations on how it should be done. I did however leave the cinema feeling ecstatic, dying for it’s official release so i could see it again, but also now I have found myself waiting for the sequels to follow. What Stuart Beattie has done here is created the perfect Hollywood styled blockbuster that explodes with an equal balance of action and drama that I believe with the right overseas distribution will not only make ‘Tomorrow When The War Began‘ a classic in Australian film history, but also will show the rest of the world that Australia with the right funding can honestly match a Hollywood blockbuster any day.

Now on a serious note, for this movie to be the success it should be and for the sequels to follow, it needs your support. Watch it, spread the word.
