QIT takes a stroll down Avenue Q

Avenue Q

By an exciting twist of fate I ended up with a free ticket to the Broadway musical Avenue Q that is currently playing at QPAC Brisbane. Two words amazingly awesome! By the end I was getting stitches from all the laughter. It was truly a superb performance like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The songs, the cast, the sets, the puppetry, everything about this musical is purely entertaining and it is great to see the cast has just as much fun performing it as the audience has watching it.

With all honesty I never thought a bunch of people running around on stage singing with their hands stuck up puppets would be this entertaining!!!

If you can get a chance to watch this, make sure you do. you won’t regret it.

AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There’s Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod — a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate Monster. And would you believe the building’s superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Their lives also intermingle with renowned nightclub singer, Lucy the Slut, and school principal, Mrs. Thistletwat. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

The show is largely inspired by (and is in the style of) Sesame Street: Most of the characters in the show are puppets (operated by actors onstage), the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an “outer borough” of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story.
Life may suck on AVENUE Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, having sex (whether hetero, homo or porno – and that’s just the puppets) are just some of the topics featured in the terrific songs of this show. For those weaned on Sesame Street, the AVENUE Q puppets may look familiar, but with musical numbers like “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” and “If You Were Gay,” this send-up of political correctness isn’t for the kiddies.
Also the sex scene shits all over Team America, the fact is by the end you will never be able to look at Sesame Street the same way again. lol
